Grammar - The German Cases - Overview

What are the German Cases good For?

Please watch the video above which will explain everything you need to know about the German cases at this stage of your journey. As always a few points worth remembering:

  • The German cases help understand who is doing what to whom in a sentence
  • They can be identified e.g. by looking at the ending of articles (dem, einer etc.) or certain pronouns (er/es/sie etc.)
  • Whenever you are in doubt simply use the Akkusativ case.
  • Use the Dativ only when you could explain to someone else why you are allowed to use it here
  • The verb will help you identify the subject (=the doer) and the object (=the victim)
