Preaching - Prepare

DURATION: 5 MINS

Let's prepare your first Preaching. You'll use the words in the numbered list below. I call those words "triggers". You'll practice a very common sentence pattern. That pattern is:

  • Ich sehe einen Stuhl. [I see a chair]
  • Ich sehe keinen Stuhl. [I don’t see a chair]
  • Ich sehe einen Stuhl. [I see a chair]
  • Ich sehe keinen Stuhl. [I don’t see a chair]

"einen" is an article.
"Stuhl" is the trigger.

One thing to notice:

Although we haven’t covered the negation in German yet, you can already use it easily. All you got to do in this Preaching is the following:

  • Ich sehe _einen Stuhl.
  • Ich sehe keinen Stuhl.

To negate “einen Stuhl” in German all you have to do is to put a “k-” in front of the “ein-” in whatever form the ein- might be found. That’s all you need to know for this exercise. We’ll cover the negation later in this course.

For now, you need to do the following: Whenever you associate a "trigger"

  • with the Superhero, use the article "einen/keinen".
  • with the Baby, use the article "ein/kein".
  • with the Fairy, use the article "eine/keine".

Let's do it together once:

  • The first trigger is "Stuhl" [speak: shtool, meaning: chair]
  • You remember that the Superhero was flying sitting on a flying chair.
  • That means you use "einen" [speak: i-nan].
  • So, if you want say: "I see a chair", you say: "Ich sehe einen Stuhl." [speak: Ee(s)h say-ye i-nen shtool]

Clear? Super. Then practice the very same pattern from the example above with the ten triggers on the next lecture. You don't have to worry about getting things right. This is just to warm up your tongue and your brain before you go for the real thing.

A quick reminder: The three articles that you need to use are:

einen/keinen = Superhero
ein/kein = Baby
eine/keine = Fairy
