Learning Vocab Efficiently
Words are the Bricks
Words are the bricks you need to build your house. But don't just grab random bricks, as that would create a shaky structure. Instead, focus on learning the right words from the texts and audio you work with, i.e., learn words in their natural context. Don't just learn random words using tools like Memrise or Anki but simply follow my course. That's enough.
My Highest Recommendation
To learn vocabulary from your course materials, use SG's vocab tool for looking up words in the Reading Comprehension lectures. For any other word lookups, I recommend downloading the DeepL App for Mac or Windows. Highlight a word or phrase, press CMD or CTRL+C+C, and get instant translations. I've shared a few tips and tricks in the video above to maximize your use of DeepL, so you won’t need to leave the course pages ever. Avoid opening new browser tabs, as it only leads to confusion.
The Best Way to Learn Vocabulary
Reading is actually the best tool for improving your vocabulary quickly. Instead of spending 20 minutes memorizing isolated words with flashcard apps, re-read texts you've worked with and take advantage of the beautiful DeepL app. This method is a lot more fun and efficient. Listening to audio of texts you've worked with is also beneficial, but reading is the most effective technique I've seen in my 30 years of experience.
How Much Vocabulary Should I Learn?
Avoid setting goals like learning 20 words per day. Instead, focus on reading, re-reading, listening, and re-listening. Just like a balanced diet ensures you get all necessary nutrients, regular engagement with your course materials will naturally expand your vocabulary.
Learning Tips
- Distribute your vocab training over the whole day. E.g. when waiting for something or just 5-10mins before you fall asleep or when you wake up.
- Keep your vocab sessions short. 10-20mins at a time are far more beneficial than a big chunk of 1-2 hours.
- Invest roughly 20% of the time you spend on this course on your vocab training. E.g. for every hour working with the course, spend an extra 12-15mins on vocab
