Arte: Thinking About Getting Married in Germany? Think Twice ;)
If you want to marry a German you very likely will need an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis. Are you married to a German? How easy was it to get married to them? I merely ask about the bureaucracy not your marital problems which are a given :P
Video Summary
- The speaker, a French citizen, and her German boyfriend decided to get married in Paris.
- They went to the local town hall (Rathaus) to order the marriage banns.
- They were initially confident about a German-French marriage but were surprised by the required documentation.
- Two lists of required documents were provided - one for the marriage and another for the foreign spouse.
- The foreign partner needed a "60 kg defeated matrimonial" and an "Ehefähigkeitszeugnis."
- The Ehefähigkeitszeugnis is a certificate proving that the person is not married and has not committed any crimes that would hinder marriage.
- To obtain this certificate, they had to fill out a questionnaire at the German embassy in Paris.
- The documents had to be sent to the German town where the boyfriend previously lived along with copies of IDs, proof of residence, and the speaker's birth certificate.
- All these documents had limited validity (some 3, others 6 months), creating a race against time.
- Both France and Germany required a complex bureaucratic process for marriage, making it challenging for European citizens, but their love endured the ordeal.
