A model for
mastering German

I don’t just teach German, I give you a learning model -- the smarterGerman Cycle -- that works for all levels and for any material. It grows with you, and can be used long after you reach B1 level.

sG makes German Grammar simple

I broke down the German language in a logical way that is simple and makes sense. You will understand everything.

The power of a tutor, for a fraction of the cost

smarterGerman was originally developed for private clients, but now I want everyone to have access to my course. So, I built a digital version that everyone can afford.

We teach the best way, not the old way.

After a decade of teaching the ‘traditional’ way, I grew frustrated with its weaknesses. I improved on the old learning model, and developed an approach that works faster, and better and is more rewarding for the German learner.

With this class
you will learn

German up to level B1 easily (this covers: vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening and to a certain degree also writing and speaking)

Powerful learning techniques useful also for B2 level

How to organize your German learning efficiently and effectively

In a language school, the usual time to reach B1 level is 180 days, with a 60% chance of passing your exam. I’m certain that you can easily beat this result with this course. The sG Cycle makes is possible to achieve German level B1 in 90 days or less, depending on your language learning skills, discipline and amount of work you put into the course.

Why the
sG cycle works better...

Fast - Feel familiar with the German language quickly.

Clear - Understand seemingly complex matters in minutes instead of hours.

Easy - Save precious time by always knowing what to do.

Enjoyable - You will remember better because Margareth's fun songs cement the concepts in your mind.

Flexible - Learn German whenever and wherever you like. It’s your tutor in a pocket.

Individual - You’ll learn German at your own speed, unlike group courses where you either wait for others to catch up or constantly fear falling behind.

Supportive - Ask Michael any question in his weekly group Q&A sessions.

What you can
expect in class

Every lesson consists of several mini-steps that you can easily integrate into your everyday life. All you need are 20 minutes here and 20 minutes there. You’ll learn about all important grammatical topics like:

How to learn and never forget the German articles.

How to make sense of the German cases (above all Akkusativ and Dativ).

Master the irregular verbs in a couple of hours.

You’ll learn also how to:

Set smart goals and organise your learning properly. Read, listen and write, even if you know only half the words. Develop a gut feeling for the German language.

This German class is for everyone between 18 and 99 who is looking for an enjoyable, self-empowering and highly efficient way to learn German and who is capable of understanding the English on this page.

I found his method and training methodology extremely logical and intuitive. Mr. Michael Schmitz has over 20 years experience in language teaching and summons all his expertise for the student's benefit. Highly Recommended

Michael had to undo years of anxiety at failing to actually learn the language, years of misunderstandings, frustrations and generally beating myself up.

So after telling myself for years that I could never, ever get to B1 standard, I got 84.5% on the exam!!! And here is the crucial thing: Michael has changed my way of learning languages for life.

I now have a system in which I can continue to learn German, not as a rush to the next exam (although goals are good!), but as a life long learning process which I enjoy. Yes….actually enjoy learning German - who would have thought that was possible?!

- Tammy Furey

I've been learning German on and off for a couple of years now. I had it mandatory at the high school and even tried years later on my own. Because I never progressed enough, I always called quits out of frustration.

I've got to know Michael from his Youtube channel, where he explained his approach and described a couple of techniques he uses. After contacting him over an email, I was surprised how quickly he got back to me.

Now that I work with him every week, I am very much pleased with the efficiency of my learning, all thanks to his quick pointers and well-structured learning plan.

He (along with his conversation tutor) got me to open up and start talking, long before I would consider that I can form sentences correctly. It helped tremendously, as in the past I tended to wait until I thought I was "ready".

I appreciate his involvement, attention to what matters for my current stage of learning, swift replies to my messages, as well as carefully crafted study materials he offers.

I highly recommend working with Michael

Michael Schmitz (Your instructor and Course Creator)

I had been teaching German in several language schools and countries for over 13 years before I got frustrated with the current system of teaching German. I never really questioned the system that is still used world wide by renowned institutions like the Goethe Institut or Berlitz and Inlingua. But once I stepped out of the system I could see clearly what went and still goes wrong and set out to fix it. This course is just the next step in the evolution of a new era of learning languages starting with German.

I have a Master's degree in German as a Foreign Language from the Technical University of Berlin and one in Turkish Studies from the Free University of Berlin. I've been working as a German tutor since 1999 and have worked with over a thousand people from almost every country of this planet. They were of all ages and classes, had all kinds of religous and political views and were at times more at times less talented to learn German. Overall I spent more than 10.000 hours of my life on teaching and learning languages.

German is my favorite language as I have a deep understanding of its logic and beauty which I'm trying to share with you in form of this course.

Margareth Jabczynski (Inspiration, contributor and singer songwriter with sG)

Margareth uses her incredible talent to help you connect abstract information with your emotions by transforming knowledge into wonderful music. Her songs are like honey that sweetens the beautiful logic and structure of this course. She worked many years as a conversation trainer at smarterGerman and knows from the heart what helps German learners like you to overcome initial inhibition and to speak freely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have access to the course?
As long as smarterGerman and the platform that hosts this course exist, you'll have access to your materials. We'll do anything to make this a couple of decades. By then you should have reached level B1 ;)
Is there a discount for students or refugees?
At this point in time no. Compared to our competitors and considering the amount and quality of its content, this course is already extremely reasonably priced. You'll get more out of it than you invest. That's our promise.
Will I pass my B1 exam after working through this course?
While you'll reach level B1 with this course, passing a German B1 exam requires additional preparation which this course can't offer fully. You'd need extra training with a living being for the oral exam. All other skills should be fine when you have worked through this course. Check out my course called "Hack your B1 German exam" which will help you to get the best results possible from your B1 exam.
How long do I need to reach level B1 from scratch with this course?
If you study 3 hours per day with this course you are likely to reach level B1 CEFR within 90 days or less. As learning is a highly individual task it might take a bit more or a bit less time. If you invest less time daily, you will most likely need a bit longer. Will I be fluent in German after this course? You can reach B1 fluency. B1 is still a pretty limited level compared to B2 e.g. You will also most likely still need a conversation trainer to practice what you have learned with a human being. I’ll provide you with tips on how to find a very affordable trainer in the course.
What language level does this course cover?
This course covers the levels A1, A2 and B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). If you are on any of these levels you will benefit from this course. And if you are on level B2 or higher and just want to refresh your basic grammar and understanding of the German language, you should also be fine.
When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
My English is not so good. Will this course work for me?
If you can understand this page well, you will be fine with the content of the course. If you struggle with English you might be a bit slower than a native English speaker though but you can still work with this course.
I'm already B1 / B2 level. Do I have to purchase the whole course and will I still benefit from this course?
Yes, you'll have to buy the whole course but will find that there are many many things that nobody has taught you yet. You'll learn a wonderfully efficient self-learning structure that you can apply outside of this course for the rest of your (learning) days. You'll also learn many smart but simple learning techniques that will benefit you even on B2 level. And you'll be able to fill your gaps without having to start from scratch. You can always skip things that are already clear to you and will also find a growing community of smart and interesting German learners here that you can exchange your thoughts and concerns with.
I have bought your old material already. What is the difference to this online course?
The old materials are all contained in this course but there are plenty of more lessons here than before. Another difference is that with this course you don't have to download or organize your materials anymore. It is already prepared to the max so that you can focus 100% on learning German. This course also contains all of Margareth's songs which were also not included in my former mateirals. If you want to upgrade your materials/account, just send me an e-mail and tell me what you have purchased and I'll subtract the sum that you have paid for my old materials from the price of this online course.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
We would never want you to be unhappy! Which is why you can preview the first lesson which will give you a sound impression of the look and feel of the course so that you can try everything out in your own time before having to purchase anything. And even after your purchase you'll have a 30-day money back guarantee because we trust you and we trust our work. Make sure to thoroughly test everything and feel free to send us any question that you have in regard of this course before you purchase or before you request a refund. In most cases we can help you quickly and easily to get on board.
Can I download the materials?
No, unless Teachable's (the host platform of this course) iOS app works for you. Try it 2-3 times to load my course in their app. If that doesn't work skip that. It's a hit or miss. This course delivers a wonderful mobile experience. Simply open it in your mobile's browser and enjoy the beauty of fully organized German learning. The reason why I don't offer downloads is that the structure of this course is golden. By downloading the materials you'd have to again struggle with sorting things out by yourself. While some learners prefer that approach, I still think that every learner benefits greatly from the structure being provided so that one can fully focus on learning and enjoying the language. If you have time offline, beautiful. You can read an actual book in German or listen to a lovely podcast that you are interested in. See it as an opportunity to dive into real life German. You will enjoy these trips off the beaten track as long as you know that there's a beautiful structure waiting for you once you get back home.
Can I pay in monthly instalments?
Yes, that's the great thing about this platform. BUT PLEASE make sure that your payments are on time as if you fail to pay on time, you'll lose access to your account and therefore your progress. >>>>>> There is no way to reactivate your account once you are unenrolled! You'd have to purchase it again! <<<<<< Once you have paid off the course you'll have constant access to this course.
Will I get a certificate after completion of this course?
No. Such a certificate would be worthless as no one would nor should recognize it as proof of anything. How do I as a future employer e.g. know what quality your German learning was? Was it really you who did the course? How long did it take you to finish the course? All these things would basically be based upon your trustworthiness. Such a certificate would not add anything to this. Officially acknowledged certificates are offered by the Goethe Institut (called Max Mueller in India), any school with a TELC certification or institutions that offer the ÖSD - Austrian language diploma. There is also Bulats but that's very limited as well. If I was an employer and needed to rely on your language skills I'd have a personal chat with you and check your skills in person or even in a trial day at work. So there will not be a fake certificate in our courses. By the way, the certificates Duolingo offers are also not worth the paper they are printed on for the very same reasons.
Can I take a Goethe or TELC exam with you/this course?
No as it wouldn't be worth the paper you'd probably print it on. Exams that matter are only offered by Goethe Institutes and TELC certified schools. If you are in the US you might have other institutions that are widely acknowledged in your country but internationally these are the go to institutions. These exams (still) require your presence. I can't and don't want to engage in such activities as it would distract me from my real passion which is making learning German an orgasmic experience. I'm not fully there yet, but give me a couple of years.
Are any lessons with a human tutor part of this course?
No. And you don't need a tutor at all as this course will teach you everything you need to reach level B1. If you wonder how you'll learn to speak German, I can tell you that for the first few months you won't have to speak to other human beings at all but will rather focus on establishing a base knowledge of the language and prepare your speaking skills with help of very powerful techniques (they are called Preaching, Oral Dictation and Secretary Technique in my course). At one point you need to take the risk and go out into the real world and use what you have learned. Paying a tutor for speaking practice has in my experience shown a rather negative effect by holding people back from using the language in real life. And if you don't live in a German speaking country yet, why bother with speaking to another human being yet? Prepare and once you have a real need and some urgency to speak you'll learn very quickly. The better your base by then, the faster you will become a fluent speaker.

This course is the essence of over 18 years of teaching German and learning several languages with over several thousand students and over 10000 hours of expertise. We are certain that you will find it an enjoyable and highly rewarding way of learning German and we will assist you wherever we can.
