Reading Out Loud - Introduction

Vorlesen - Reading Out Loud (ROL)

If you have a kid I hope you read with it regularly. It's such a memorable experience for both parent and kid. But even though this is not parenting 10, as a language learner you will benefit greatly from reading out loud. Here are a few things that you'll experience and benefit from:

  • It's sensual. You hear your own voice - you'll get used to it - and actually feel the language in your head and chest.
  • It's good for your pronunciation. The software you use will provide you with good enough feedback about your pronunciation.
  • It's a low barrier speaking practice. You only need to read off the screen and don't have to think about what to say and how to structure it.
  • It's good for your memory as it's repeating things you have worked with already for the entire lesson.
  • It shouldn't take long to read out loud through one chapter so you should consider doing this 2-3 times focussing on improving the parts that the software isn't recognizing well.
And as you are a total beginner, don't worry if things aren't as easy as I might make them sound here. Nobody expects you to be perfect anytime soon. If certain words simply won't come over your lips clear enough, skip them for now. Everything will fall into place as you progress through your course. Now off you go and try to read out loud some German. You'll find some instructions on the next page.
