Let's revise your plan
It's time to get real and take a good look at your plans for the DSH exam. Are you all set with a clear and well-structured path? It's a simple yes or no question, so let's not beat around the bush. Just like when someone asks if you're pregnant – you either are or you aren't!
A proper plan is crucial for achieving your goal of passing the DSH exam with the desired result. It's not just some vague idea; it's a detailed roadmap that outlines specific steps, resources, and timelines. So, if your plan isn't as comprehensive as the one described below, it's time to buckle down and get organized.
Only SMART goals are good goals
First things first, set a SMART goal for yourself – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For example, aim to pass the DSH exam at TU-Berlin with a DSH-2 score three months from now on December 10, 2023. Be specific about how much time you'll dedicate each day and which days of the week you'll study.
Step by Step
Next, break down your plan into actionable steps. Determine what you need to study on specific days – reading, listening, writing, and speaking – and gather all the necessary resources, including books and sample exams. As you are working with this course you can save some time and just write: I'll work 3 hours daily with the DSH prep course of SG. Additionally I'll spend x hours daily on listening to science podcasts, reading scientific articles and writing summaries of scientific articles I read on the internet. And by scientific I don't only mean the scientific topic you are about to study. See to it that you consume a wide range of scientific material.
Set Deadlines and Milestones
Set deadlines and milestones to keep yourself on track. But remember, life can throw curveballs, so be prepared with a contingency plan to handle any unexpected challenges that might arise.
Review and Evaluation
Regularly review and evaluate your progress. If you find your plan isn't working as well as you hoped, don't be afraid to make adjustments. Flexibility is key!
Sharing is Caring
Lastly, don't go it alone. Share your plan and experiences with the community. You'll find support, and others can learn from your journey too.
Now, if you haven't already set up a proper plan, don't stress! Just share your current status with the community. There's no shame in needing some guidance, especially when it comes to goal-setting. Let's work together and ensure you reach your goal of acing the DSH exam! You've got this!
A SMART Sample Plan
Here's my easy-to-read plan for preparing for the DSH exam in 3 months.
In three months from now on Dec. 10 2023 I'll take my DSH exam at TU-Berlin and I shall pass it with a DSH-2 grade. I've already registered for the exam or will do so tomorrow.
Before starting my three-month preparation, I'll make sure to gather all the necessary books and sample exams and that I make myself familiar with the SG DSH preparation course. Each day of the week will have a specific focus: Mondays for Leseverstehen (reading), Tuesdays for Hörverstehen (listening), Wednesdays and Thursdays for Writing, and Fridays for Speaking practice.
During this period, I'll work through one chapter of the SG DSH prep course per week. Additionally, I'll use various sample exams to practice and improve my skills if I got some spare time.
Considering my other commitments, I have around 66 days to study for 3 hours each day. That amounts to 198 hours, which I'll divide over 10 lessons, dedicating roughly 20 hours to each lesson. If I find I need less time for a lesson or find extra time during the day, I'll use the extra time to immerse myself in the German language by listening to podcasts, engaging in daily conversations on Deutschgym, and reading scientific articles. To enhance my vocabulary, I'll utilize readlang.
Since my job and personal responsibilities may cause delays, I'll start my preparation one month earlier, allowing me four months in total.
I'll closely monitor my progress and feelings throughout the process. If needed, I'll adjust the number of study hours or the overall timeframe accordingly. Whenever I'm in doubt about something, I'll reach out to Michael via the SG Community for help
Throughout this journey, I'll actively participate in the SG Community, sharing my work, experiences, and challenges. I'll also engage in analyzing and discussing the experiences of others.
I'm committed to sticking to my plan, but I'll also remain flexible and find solutions to any obstacles that may arise. Ultimately, I'm determined to succeed in the DSH exam and reach my goal. Shoudl I ever struggle with my performance or motivation I'll reach out to the SG Community for support. I understand that I don't have to and should not even try to approach this alone.
