Welcome to this Course
Welcome to SmarterGerman. I’m thrilled to work with you. We might never meet in person, but after a few lessons you will feel like we know each other well enough.
If you are in the free trial, know that I am already available if you feel stuck or unsure whether this is the right fit. My approach is very different from most online courses, so feeling confused or overwhelmed at the beginning is normal. If that happens, just message me in the community and I’ll help you onboard personally.
I have studied the art of teaching German for 25 years and hold a Magister in German as a Foreign Language and Turkish Studies. I have also studied a wide range of languages at a basic level as part of my degree, and I have spoken English since I was eighteen. My thesis was on mnemonics for teaching German, and my final exam on intercultural learning and using a learner’s native language in class. You will notice both in this course, which is the essence of everything I have learned in over 25 years, so you don’t have to spend that much time on your German, unless you want to ;)
SmarterGerman on mobile
Your whole course fits in your pocket. Install the Teachable app, sign in with the email you use here, and pick up right where you left off on iPhone or Android.
- Learn offline. Download lessons and videos, then study on a plane, on a train, or anywhere with no signal.
- Always in sync. Start on your laptop and continue on your phone. Your progress follows you automatically.
- Dark mode and lock-screen controls. Comfortable evening study, and audio you can pause without unlocking.
- Gentle reminders. Optional notifications bring you back when new content unlocks.
To start: sign in with the same email you use here, then type the one-time code the app sends you.
The app is great for videos, audio, reading, and quizzes. Some interactive tools work best in a full web browser, above all the ones that use your microphone: speaking practice, pronunciation practice, and conversation practice. A few interactive exercises can also behave oddly in the app, especially on iPhone. My general advice is to do your main studying in a browser and use the app for videos and review on the go. If a tool does not load, or your microphone is not picked up, open the same lesson in your (mobile) browser and carry on.
