What is being tested?

The listening comprehension (Hörverstehen) section of the DSH exam is designed to test your ability to understand spoken German, particularly in academic contexts. The goal of this portion of the exam is to measure how well you can comprehend, analyze, and interpret spoken German language in various formats, including lectures, discussions, or presentations.

Typically, the listening exercises can include longer monologues or dialogues, and they often pertain to university life, cultural topics, or more complex, abstract subjects. You might be asked to summarize the main ideas, identify key points, understand specific details, and infer meaning from context. 

Through this part of the exam, the assessors aim to ensure that you have the necessary listening skills to follow and engage in academic activities at a German-speaking university, such as attending lectures, participating in seminars, and understanding oral instructions or discussions.

How do I get better at listening?

Here's a how this course will help you prepare effectively for the listening comprehension:

1. Understand the Format: First, you'll get familiar with the structure of the listening comprehension section. You'll know what types of listening tasks to expect (lectures, dialogues, etc.) and the kinds of questions that are typically asked (right/wrong, fill in the gaps, multiple choice, etc).
2. Improve Your Vocabulary: You'll need a broad vocabulary to comprehend the variety of topics presented in the listening part. With our built in vocab tool you'll learn new words based on the texts in this course. If you want to expand your vocabulary beyond this course I can only recommend to use Readlang which costs a fiver per month. I'll share more about it in a bit.
3. Regular Active Listening Practice: Include regular listening practice in your study schedule. Use resources like Deutsche Welle, podcasts, lectures, or audio books. Start with simpler material and gradually move to more complex academic topics. In our Community you'll find plenty of resources for this. Feel free to suggest your favorite materials there.
4. Shadowing: Later in this course you'll get to know a powerful technique that will help you improve your listening and pronunciation skill. You'll learn to understand information much quicker if you practice this technique regularly.
5. Develop Your Note-Taking Skills: The listening section of the exam allows and requires note-taking, making this skill indispensable. Perfect your ability to encapsulate spoken information accurately yet succinctly. I've incorporated a lesson early in this course just for this. Plus, I'll continually offer benchmark answers for each exercise, serving as handy tools to evaluate your efforts against.
6. Work on Your Speed: As the audio clips won't be paused in the DSH exam, you need to get comfortable with processing spoken German in real time. Speed comes with regular practice.
7. Self-Evaluation: Regularly evaluate your listening skills. If you find a specific area challenging, spend more time improving in that aspect. If you are in doubt about your performance you can reach out to me in the Community and I can give you some rough feedback. Keep in mind that I won't be able to do that on a daily basis. So overall you should already bring a bit of confidence with you.
8. Use Transcripts: Use the provided transcripts of the audio you're practicing with. Listen first, do the required exercise and then read the transcript to check your understanding and to find out where you need to put in more work.
9. Relax and Stay Positive: Lastly, keep a positive mindset. Regular practice will certainly lead to improvement over time, so don't get discouraged by initial difficulties. I hope you have planned your journey into the German academic world well - that's also a crucial part of being a student over here - so that you don't feel too stressed about getting to the desired DSH level.
