Frequently Asked Questions

As long as smarterGerman and the platform that hosts this course exist, you'll have access to your materials. We'll do anything to make this a couple of decades. By then you should have reached level B1 ;)
At this point in time no. Compared to our competitors and considering the amount and quality of its content, this course is already extremely reasonably priced. You'll get more out of it than you invest. That's our promise.
While you'll reach level B1 with this course, passing a German B1 exam requires additional preparation which this course can't offer fully. You'd need extra training with a living being for the oral exam. All other skills should be fine when you have worked through this course. Check out my course called "Hack your B1 German exam" which will help you to get the best results possible from your B1 exam.
If you are an experienced language learner and study with this course 4.5 hours per day (that's the amount you are expected to work in most physical intensive courses) it is possible to reach level B1 CEFR within 180 days. As learning is a highly individual task it might take a bit (or a lot) more or a bit less time. If you invest less time daily, you will most likely need a bit longer. In the course you'll find a more detailed estimation also for other levels. Will I be fluent in German after this course? You can reach B1 fluency. B1 is still a pretty limited level compared to B2 e.g. You will also most likely still need conversation practice to practice what you have learned with a human being. I’ll provide you with tips on how to find someone for speaking practice late in the course as in the beginning you shouldn't worry about speaking with others at all! First build a solid base of knowledge.
This course covers the levels A1, A2 and B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). If you are on any of these levels you will benefit from this course. And if you are on level B2 or higher and just want to refresh your basic grammar and understanding of the German language, you should also be fine.
The course starts now and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
If you can understand this page well, you will be fine with the content of the course. If you struggle with English you might be a bit slower than a native English speaker though but you can still work with this course.
Yes, you'll have to buy the whole course but will find that there are many many things that nobody has taught you yet. You'll learn a wonderfully efficient self-learning structure that you can apply outside of this course for the rest of your (learning) days. You'll also learn many smart but simple learning techniques that will benefit you even on B2 level. And you'll be able to fill your gaps without having to start from scratch. You can always skip things that are already clear to you and will also find a growing community of smart and interesting German learners here that you can exchange your thoughts and concerns with.
We would never want you to be unhappy! Which is why you can preview the first lesson which will give you a sound impression of the look and feel of the course so that you can try everything out in your own time before having to purchase anything. And even after your purchase you'll have a 30-day money back guarantee because we trust you and we trust our work. Make sure to thoroughly test everything and feel free to send us any question that you have in regard of this course before you purchase or before you request a refund. In most cases we can help you quickly and easily to get on board.
No, unless Teachable's (the host platform of this course) iOS app works for you. Try it 2-3 times to load my course in their app. If that doesn't work skip that. It's a hit or miss. This course delivers a wonderful mobile experience. Simply open it in your mobile's browser and enjoy the beauty of fully organized German learning. The reason why I don't offer downloads is that the structure of this course is golden. By downloading the materials you'd have to again struggle with sorting things out by yourself. While some learners prefer that approach, I still think that every learner benefits greatly from the structure being provided so that one can fully focus on learning and enjoying the language. If you have time offline, beautiful. You can read an actual book in German or listen to a lovely podcast that you are interested in. See it as an opportunity to dive into real life German. You will enjoy these trips off the beaten track as long as you know that there's a beautiful structure waiting for you once you get back home.
Yes, that's the great thing about this platform. BUT PLEASE make sure that your payments are on time as if you fail to pay on time, you'll lose access to your account and therefore your progress. >>>>>> There is no way to reactivate your account once you are unenrolled! You'd have to purchase it again! <<<<<< Once you have paid off the course you'll have constant access to this course.
No. Such a certificate would be worthless as no one would nor should recognize it as proof of anything. How do I as a future employer e.g. know what quality your German learning was? Was it really you who did the course? How long did it take you to finish the course? All these things would basically be based upon your trustworthiness. Such a certificate would not add anything to this. Officially acknowledged certificates are offered by the Goethe Institut (called Max Mueller in India), any school with a TELC certification or institutions that offer the ÖSD - Austrian language diploma. There is also Bulats but that's very limited as well. If I was an employer and needed to rely on your language skills I'd have a personal chat with you and check your skills in person or even in a trial day at work. So there will not be a fake certificate in our courses. By the way, the certificates Duolingo offers are also not worth the paper they are printed on for the very same reasons.
No as it wouldn't be worth the paper you'd probably print it on. Exams that matter are only offered by Goethe Institutes and TELC certified schools. If you are in the US you might have other institutions that are widely acknowledged in your country but internationally these are the go to institutions. These exams (still) require your presence. I can't and don't want to engage in such activities as it would distract me from my real passion which is making learning German an orgasmic experience. I'm not fully there yet, but give me a couple of years.
No. And you don't need a tutor at all as this course will teach you everything you need to reach level B1. If you wonder how you'll learn to speak German, I can tell you that for the first few months you won't have to speak to other human beings at all but will rather focus on establishing a base knowledge of the language and prepare your speaking skills with help of very powerful techniques (they are called Preaching, Oral Dictation and Secretary Technique in my course). At one point you need to take the risk and go out into the real world and use what you have learned. Paying a tutor for speaking practice has in my experience shown a rather negative effect by holding people back from using the language in real life. And if you don't live in a German speaking country yet, why bother with speaking to another human being yet? Prepare and once you have a real need and some urgency to speak you'll learn very quickly. The better your base by then, the faster you will become a fluent speaker.
First of all, as a beginner you don't have to speak freely at all. Speaking freely is a very challenging task that requires solid (!) preparation. That preparation is achieved with help of three powerful techniques that allow you to speak to yourself and to get instant feedback with help of wonderful transcription and recording software. You do and should not pay anyone to practice general speaking. Preparing for an oral exam is a different matter but only matters about 6-8 weeks before your exam. That will be discussed in the B1-Exam Hacking course. Imagine B1 as the Kindergarten and elementary school level. You can achieve the required level on your own IF you follow my advice and the techniques in this course properly. If you don't have anyone around to speak German to, the question is why bother at such an early stage. The better you are prepared, the more confident you'll be when finally you'll have the naturally occurring opportunity of speaking. If you have people around, speak. Don't hold back but learn to listen well ideally before start speaking as listening is the key to effective self-improvement and proper German. You'll improve your speaking skill quite quickly once it becomes urgent and relevant for your daily life. Until then, prepare and practice on your own. This course will make sure you'll make sure you are well prepared.
